Praying for Miracles

After being at school all week, I was able to see a big improvement in Aron’s alertness. He has been opening his eyes for longer periods of time and is now better able to track our movements when he is alert. Also, when we ask him to look at us, he will turn his head and focus his eyes on our faces. I also feel that Aron is sometimes able to recognize who we are.

For yes or no questions, we have been working with Aron to nod and shake his head appropriately. It still takes a lot of effort and is a work in progress, but he is improving. On Saturday, the nurses got to see Aron alert. He tracked their movements with his eyes, squeezed their hand on command, and gave a thumbs up in response to a question. Although none of this is new to us, it was good for the staff to get to see Aron’s progress for themselves. To them, our observations do not mean much until they witness it.

Aron has now been off the ventilator for almost a week. He no longer is on the cool aerosol but instead has a tube of oxygen, which is one of the last steps before being completely disconnected from any breathing tubes. The next step is to take him off the trach, when he is able to breath through his nose and mouth. When the respiratory therapist plugs the trach to test this, Aron has trouble breathing through his nose and mouth because of an obstruction in his airway. This could either be from his tongue or from the trach itself. There are different types of trachs, and they are going to try a speaking trach so that he will be able to swallow on his own. Once Aron is off the trach, he will have to move to a different facility. We are hoping that Aron will be more alert before he is able to be off the trach. In which case he will be able to transfer to a better facility that is more equipped for rehabilitation.

Please continue to pray that Aron will become more alert and more responsive, especially before they take him off the trach, and he is forced to move to another facility. Also, Aron’s parents are advocating for insurance to allow him to have a cranioplasty, a surgery that will replace the part of his skull that was removed to relieve the pressure in his brain. Please pray that Kaiser will approve this surgery with the doctor we want. Right now Aron’s brain is vulnerable and mostly unprotected without the skull cap on his forehead. We all will feel more comfortable after the cranioplasty.

I was reminded by our pastor today in our church sermon that we should be praying for miracles both in and through this situation. Meaning that we should continue to pray for healing and full restoration, but also for miracles in our own lives and the lives of others touched by Aron—that we would grow in love and patience and that others would come to know the Lord. Thank you again for your support and prayers, especially to those who have come alongside us as encouragement and comfort.

—Amy

Psalm 130—Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord; O Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy. If you, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? But with you there is forgiveness; therefore you are feared. I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I put my hope. My soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning. O Israel, put your hope in the Lord, for with the Lord is unfailing love and with him is full redemption. He himself will redeem Israel from all their sins.

  1. You don't know me but my name is Emily and I attend Florence Ave Foursquare Church and, more specifically, Rhonda's Salt & Light Sunday School class. The Lord laid on my heart to put a reminder on my calendar on my cell phone to pray for Aron and his family and friends. So,just know, that every day at 7:15 p.m., I am praying for all of you.

  4. I know so many times when we pray that little nudge of "how, when & why" sits in the back of our minds.

But while reading the scriptures this morning I came across the story of the bleeding woman, who touched the hem of Jesus & was healed by her faith. I was reminded how much prayer & faith go hand in hand.

We will be continually praying & believing for COMPLETE healing for Aaron, as well as Kaiser' approval of the cranioplasty surgery.

So wonderful to hear of his progress & definitely see the Lords hand on him & his healing process!

  7. To the Shubin family and Amy. To everyone who seek God for help, I would encourage you to watch this 5 part video on youtube. "How Great Is Our God" reminds us of just who we are dealing with here. The God that we pray to? Yes, He is able to do anything, and nothing is impossible for Him. We should all be encouraged to go to our Heavenly Father for whatever it is that may be troubling us. Look at this link. May God bless all who trust in Him!

  10. In our daily prayers we will include that Kaiser approves the cranioplasty surgery for Shubin. Last week we went to visit Mr. Shubin and we were happy to find him breathing on his own without the ventilator. While we were there he opened his both eyes and we told him that we were going to play a pen game with him. We asked him to follow the pen from one side to another with his eyes and he did, we noticed that he got tired after a while so we stopped and let him rest. Nathan started talking to him about car stuff, and then Nathan decided to show him his new school i.d. picture that he had taken on registration day. While Nathan was showing off his school i.d. Shubin started to lift up his head a few inches from his pillow. I guess he was trying to get a better glimpse of the picture. It was really exciting to see him do this and the effort he was putting into it. Afterwards Nathan pulled out his cell phone and asked Shubin if he wanted to see pictures of our dog? Once again Shubin lifted up his head a few inches away from his pillow to see the pictures. We said our goodbyes and started to head out, but we heard him cough really loud so we went back in to ask if he was ok and he gave us thumbs up. We like to share our visiting experience with his family, Amy, and friends and let you guys know that when we visit him we always see a great improvement. Mr. Shubin is really putting up a fight! He just needs time.

Our prayers for you will continue Shubin until we see you walk out of the hospital, keep up the hard work. We know you have it in you.

  11. Hello Shubin Family, My name is Tara and my dad is the Pastor of Calvary Chapel of Downey. I heard your story from my good friends Mike and Karyn. We just opened a skate park at our church and had our grand opening there with 200 plus kids. I printed out the picture and story of Aron and the the youth pastor had all the kids pray for him! You are now on our prayer chain as well and we will continue to pray for your Aron. I have an Aaron and he is 5 years old, I can't help but think of the pain you are all going through but know that our God will see you through this! May God use this in many lives.

  12. The start of school is around the corner and it's not going to be the same without you Aron. Your name is in the OLPH prayer book, and I know many of your students are praying for you as are the Origel/McDermott families.

We miss you Aron and will continue to pray for you.
